Plate volume with 195 (of 197) numbered engraved plates, including 15 double-page maps and one map on 4 sheets. (Lacks pl. 21-22). Sezione II. "L'architettura greca". Text: wrappers dated 1841-1832, title-page "1834-1841" [cancel title: 1832]. Plate vol. with 177 (of 178) plates numbered to 168 (total includes 10 bis plates), plate 2 a double-page plan of Athens. (Lacks pl. 5.) Sezione III. "L'architettura romana". Text: wrapper titles dated 1837-1832, title dated "1830-1840" [two cancel titles: 1839 and 1832]. Plate vol. with title dated "1830-1840", 254 (of 256) numbered engraved plates, the first on 4 joined double-page sheets, 30 others double-page, and 3 others on two double-page sheets. (Lacks pl. 34 and 35, occasional marginal waterstaining and light spotting.) Text in original printed front wrappers and modern back wrappers, cloth backs, plates unbound and uncut, preserved together in 6 green cloth boxes. FINE COPY. 'Luigi Canina's is one of the most monumental antiquarian publications of the 19th century; it is still of the highest usefulness today' ( Avery's Choice: Five centuries of great architectural books, edited by Adolf Placzek, New York: 1997, pp. 215-216 no. 310). The plates in section I include not only Egyptian but also Middle Eastern, Persian, Indian and Chinese architecture. Section III has the 'Pianta topografica di Roma antica con i principali monumenti ... delineata dall'architetto Luigi Canina nell'anno 1832' as plate 1. On a scale of 1:5000, on four joined double-page sheets, it includes details of the Severan marble fragments. The other double-page bis plates in the same volume (198, 145 and 237B) are also designed to be pasted to their predecessors to form large maps. The British Architectural Library only has the 8° 'economy' edition of the text.
